Phonics & Reading
A big focus of year 1 is the statutory phonics test, taken in the Summer term of Year 1.
Building on children’s phonics knowledge is a key priority at St. Peter & St Paul’s and so all year 1/ 2 children will take part in daily 30 - minute phonics sessions, in addition to 30 - minute guided reading sessions in small groups.
This well help children to decode words and to ensure they are on track to become fluent readers, enabling them to enjoy reading for pleasure and learning.
Children’s progress will be assessed regularly, with catch up sessions in place to support children to succeed.

Maths
We follow a Mastering Number Approach with the aim to promote fluency and reasoning. The activities in lessons are practical and hands – on to meet the needs of the children.
We encourage children to play 'Numbots' at home for 10 minutes, 3 times a week. This will help to improve maths fluency and recall and children will be rewarded in Celebration Assembly on Fridays for their progress.
Year 2 children are also encouraged to also play 'TT Rockstars' to practice their times tables. Badges will be awarded in Celebration Assembly for progress.
The links for both websites can be found below: Please ask us if you need your child's log in details.
