Year 5 & 6 is an exciting time where the children really grow in independence and maturity. There are more opportunities to take responsibilities in school such as Head Boy, Head Girl, House Captains and subject Lead Learners.
Our enrichment History and Geography topics this year are: Extreme Earth, Japan, Elizabethan England, Crime and Punishment through history, Mayans and Italy. Our Art and D&T themes are: David Hockney, Hokusai's Great Wave, Tudor Roses, building bridges and sewing felt phone cases. For more information on these please see the subject overviews.
Our outdoor PE day is Wednesday. In the autumn term our class will go swimming. Friday is our swimming day. We ask that children arrive at school in their PE kit ensuring it is appropriate for the current weather as they will be going out at break times.
PE kit should be: dark shorts or jogging bottoms, a white or maroon school t-shirt and either pumps or trainers. They should wear their cardigan or school jumper as part of their kit rather than a hoodie. Please ensure all jewellery is removed including earrings. If earrings can’t be removed, please place a plaster over each earring to ensure your child’s safety when engaging in P.E lessons. For more information on swimming lessons, please find the link below.
A big focus in Year 6 is to help prepare the children to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our non-Catholic children learn about the sacrament and help their friends to prepare.
The children in Year 6 will also be able to attend our week residential trip to Standon Bowers, which is an amazing opportunity to take part in lots of outdoor and adventurous activities and build their confidence and independence.
Of course, SATs are an important focus for us during the school year and the children need to learn and revise new grammar, maths concepts and read daily to help prepare for these tests, which are completed in May.
This is also the year when the children and parents need to apply to secondary school. The applications need to be completed by the end of October and parents are notified of places on March 1st.
